Regarding Duke Nukem Forever

There are a few points that people are failing to consider when it comes to Duke Nukem Forever, and how it has “failed”.

1. Remember that Gearbox pretty much walked in on a game that has been in stasis for 14 odd years. While it’s remarkable what they did to DNF in such a short time frame, keep in mind that you can only do so much to such an old foundation. Ideally, Gearbox should have jettisoned the whole thing and started with a fresh slate, but that would have pushed back the release date even further, and would cue more jeers from the gaming community. But on the bright side…

2. Gearbox now has the Duke Nukem IP under it’s belt. This means they now can make a proper Duke Nukem game from scratch, and it will at least be as good as Borderlands, if not better. (And I consider Borderlands to be a pretty nice game, truth be told.)

I’m not arguing that Duke Nukem Forever isn’t a bad game. I can’t make that judgement call because I haven’t played the game. But I am arguing that the DN franchise isn’t dead, just that Gearbox needs a clear slate to work it’s magic. Starting with a 14 year old foundation that may have been flawed out of the gate is of course, going to fail.
